Smoking and tummy tuck. Do I still have a high chance for complications?
Smoking and tummy tuck. Do I still have a high chance for complications?
May 30, 2017
Thank you for your question. The general recommendation for cessation of smoking prior to surgery is 8 weeks. At the 8 week mark your chances for complications drop significantly. There is still a risk for delayed wound healing, however, this risk can happen to any patient following surgery. Congratulations on quitting smoking and good luck with your upcoming procedure.Fadi Chahin MD, FACS

Is it standard practice to not give a patient their before and after photos?
Jul 30, 2015
Hello and thank you for your question. As you have been instructed, technically the pictures are part of your medical records, and therefore should be available to you upon your request. It is standard practice in my office that should a patient request then, they can be placed on a CD or zip drive and directly given to the patient (due to patient privacy). Now it could be that somewhere in your paperwork that you signed the practice states that pictures are the sole property of the practice...
Will a plastic surgeon check for a diastasis recti before surgery?
Will a plastic surgeon check for diastasis recti before surgery?
Jul 27, 2015
Thank you for your question. Generally, rectus muscle diastasis is determined at the time of the physical examination portion of the consultation. Sometimes its visible and presents itself as a triangle that extends from the bottom of the belly button to above the mons, however this is not always the case. The application of gentle pressure can also determine the degree of diastasis. Palpation can also determine if there is a hernia present. In my opinion I would set up a follow up...

Any suggestions with IV sedation with local?
Jul 24, 2015
Thank you for your question. This is entirely too much surgery to have while only under a local anesthesia. I usually explain to patients the difference between local anesthesia and IV sedation is with local you are completely awake only the small areas being operated on are numb, however with IV sedation you are put into a conscious sedative state. Local anesthesia can safely be performed by a plastic surgeon alone with the use of a numbing agent (i.e. Lidocaine), however IV sedation is...

Filler not working. Is this normal?
Jul 23, 2015
Hi and thank you for your question. I usually advice patients with more pronounced wrinkling that they will see improvement after the first treatment however, long term use of the product whether it be Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport will help soften the lines over time and overall you will be happier with the results. Generally, we set a patient up with a follow up muscle paralytic injection right around the 10 week mark and I will take pictures to reference their improvement with continued...

How long after one cosmetic surgery may I have another?
Jul 22, 2015
Hello and thank you for your question. Typically, I suggest waiting a minimum of 3 months in between elective procedures. You want to ensure that you are out of the immediate post-operative window wihtout any complications prior to undergoing further elective surgery. Without knowing the extent of the rhinoplasty, it is a bit difficult to anticipate if these procedures can safely be done in the same day. My recommendation would be to set up a consultation with a Board Certified Plastic...

I need a in network (united healthcare) PS who does DIEP flap reconstruction
Apr 14, 2015
Thank you for your question. As I am sure you aware, this is a very specialized microvascular training, and not all surgeons perform such a procedure. As you have previously been instructed, the best advice would be to contact your insurance carrier directly to get a list of in-network physicians. If you have a large health institution in any neighboring cities, they could have an in-network microvascular trained surgeon. We routinely perform these procedures in my practice, and it is my...
What's the difference between gummy bear implants and textured or silicone?
What's the difference between gummy bear implants with textured or silicone?
Mar 6, 2015
Thank you for your question. Basically the cohesive silicone gel and gummy bear implants are essentially the same material internally, however, as you have previously been informed, the gummy bear implant is a lot denser. The gummy bear implants that we use in my practice are manufactured by Allergan and known as Style 410. There are various height versus projection ratios and your board certified plastic surgeon should be the best reference for what you are a candidate for based on your...

Why can't I lift after the breast implant surgery? My implants are behind the muscle. My doctor would not explain.
Mar 5, 2015
Thank you for your question. When the breast implant is placed submuscular (behind the muscle) you want to initially minimize any initiation or movement of the muscle. After surgery a scar tissue capsule forms (which is a normal occurrence) and any disruption of this capsule too soon post-operatively can cause a number of risks including but not limited to: bleeding, prolonged swelling, and capsular contracture formation. Our goal with minimizing lifting is to allow this capsule to form...
What are the dangers of Breast Augmentation? How long do they normally last?
What are the dangers of Breast Augmentation? How long do they normally last?
Feb 27, 2015
Thank you for your question. In my practice the silicone gel implants are a more popular choice for a number of reasons, one being they mimic the natural consistency of breast tissue more accurately. Now that being said, there are more than one silicone gel option currently on the market. There is a "high profile" breast implant that will give you upper pole fullness and I find is a more popular implant with the younger demographic patient. There are anatomical breast implants that actually...
Sticky strips post breast augmentation - purpose?
Sticky strips post breast augmentation-purpose?
Feb 26, 2015
Hello and thank you for your question. "Steri-strips" is the name of the tape that you are referring to. This is commonly used following any surgery to aid in reinforcing the incision site. In surgery, glue is often applied to the strip which will help it to stay on the incision site for a prolonged period post-operatively. The glue tends to breakdown and the strips will fall off on their own. I often urge patients the allow the strips to remain in place as long as possible. As you have been...

Is there a way to pay for breast implants monthly?
Feb 2, 2015
Thank you for your question. As you have been informed Care Credit is a company that aids in financing all things medical (i.e. dental, vision, medical, even veterinary). Most repayment plans that they offer are 0% interest, however it would be best to check with the surgeon to see what plans they accept. You can apply online directly through their website and they give you immediate results. I hope this information helps you and good luck!Fadi Chahin MD, FACSPlastic and Reconstructive...
What is a full Mommy Makeover?
What is a full Mommy Makeover?
Jan 27, 2015
Thank you for your question. Generally when we discuss a mommy makeover it addresses areas often affected by pregnancy which are the breasts and abdomen. While carrying a child, the abdominal muscles separate and the skin stretches to accommodate the growing abdomen. Following breast feeding most women experience a volume reduction or a different volume distribution of the breast tissue. Any one or both of these areas are addressed with the mommy makeover. For the abdomen most patients...

Got drain out at 4 wks post op today tummy tuck, lipo, muscle repair. Is a lot of fluid normal to leak out after removal?
Jan 23, 2015
Thank you for your question. As you have been previously instructed this is not a normal post-operative finding following a tummy tuck procedure. Although each plastic surgeon and their office operates differently, it is standard practice that the physician who performed the surgery follow up with you after surgery. I would absolutely contact your plastic surgeon's office and be seen on a follow up as soon as possible. In my practice, hardly ever is a drain left in that long post-operatively...

I'm 4 weeks post op tummy tuck, lipo, muscle repair and still have drain. Is this normal?
Jan 19, 2015
Thank you for your question. Like you have previously been informed the prolonged use of a surgical drain could mean hematoma, seroma, or infection. Based on the picture that you provided of the drain and its contents, my best guess would eliminate infection. Generally when there is an infection you see a milky or cloudy fluid filling up the drains. Clearly every situation is different and therefore close follow up with your plastic surgeon is essential. The reason that he/she has you...
