Massaging nose after rhinoplasty

Will Massaging the Nose After Rhinoplasty Help?

I do not recommend massaging the nose after rhinoplasty as there is usually no benefit to this maneuver.

The swelling is usually handled by a splint and steristrips. The steristrips may be worn for a month. (Paul Vitenas, Jr., MD, Houston Plastic Surgeon)

This should be under the strict guidance of your doctor. You would want the person who knows exactly what is inside your nose to propose whether to massage or not. The nose will start out very stiff and woody and numb but even without massage, this will soften over the first year. You wouldn’t want to do anything to hurt the result! (Richard P. Rand, MD, FACS, )

Generally, no massaging after Rhinoplasty

The healing process can take months and even up to a year until you see the final results. You want to be careful about not injuring your nose so when it comes to massaging, I would definitely check with your doctor and see what he recommends.

Generally, time is the best thing to help with the healing. Massaging is more commonly recommended with all other cosmetic procedures. (Sam Speron, MD, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)

Rhinoplasty and massage

I would absolutely not massage the nose after a rhinoplasty. You may disturb some of the work performed. The tissue swelling will take a while to go down, maybe up to a year. You have to be patient. (Steven Wallach, MD, Portland Plastic Surgeon)

Leave the nose alone after rhinoplasty

During the rhinoplasty procedure, delicate sutures are placed to hold delicate pieces of cartilage. In addition, the bones may have been fractured and reset in a new position. There is a fair amount of swelling and healing that takes place and it is typical for that to take 6 months to really improve. These delicate structures can be moved out of place if massaged. I do not recommend massage to my patients post rhinoplasty. (Sirish Maddali, MD, New York Plastic Surgeon)

Routine massage of the nose is not recommended

In general I do not routinely recommend massage of the nose following rhinoplasty. In some cases gentle massage may be indicated when there is significant swelling of the upper portion of the nose after surgery. (Jeffrey Zwiren, MD, Manhattan Plastic Surgeon)

Leave your nose alone

The best advice is to leave your nose alone. Especially with rhinoplasty, it is important to let the tissues heal without disturbing them.

It would be a mistake to massage. Before you do anything, please check with your surgeon. (David Shafer, MD, West Orange Facial Plastic Surgeon)

Talk to your surgeon. If you are still worried, get another opinion. Massage is definitely not indicated. And swelling may not even be the problem. You need hands on care that you trust. (George J. Beraka, MD (retired), Seattle Plastic Surgeon)

Nasal massage after Rhinoplasty is not helpful.

Certainly, speak with your surgeon, but I’m not aware of any beneficial effects of nasal massage to minimize scar tissue or swelling after rhinoplasty. (Eric M. Joseph, MD, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)

Massage post rhinoplasty (nose job): only under the guidance of a professional

There are some who feel that massage may be beneficial in expediting swelling and promoting healing but it remains somewhat controversial and should be strictly supervised or administered by a professional. One particular technique is the Vodder technique of Manual lymphatic drainage.

Query your physician as he/she may have strong feelings one way or the other and may have specific recommendations or restrictions in this regard. Massage does have the potential to displace or deform the delicate structures that have been treated in the course of a rhinoplasty so this should not be undertaken without consulting your physician in regards to technique and timing. (Otto Joseph Placik, MD, )

Massaging the nose after a rhinoplasty would not help with scar tissue and swelling. Steroid shots placed in the tip of the nose during a postoperative visit in the first few months after the procedure can help with swelling.

Low salt diet will also help. Make sure all allergies are under control. Blenderm tape applied across the bridge of the nose at night for the first 6 months will help control swelling and edema from accumulating underneath the skin in the nose. (William Portuese, MD, Seattle Facial Plastic Surgeon)

Do not massage.

If you massage you could disrupt a lot of the delicate work done to your nose. Let you nose heal on its own but if you have concerns, talk to you surgeon. (Kari L. Colen, MD, New York Plastic Surgeon)
