Facelift and rhinoplasty
Having a few different procedures is very normal, as long as the surgeon feels comfortable doing so. Usually for something like that some surgeons have another plastic surgeon helping in the suturing.
Being under for 8 hours should be ok as long as you are monitored by a certified anesthesiologist. (Stuart B. Kincaid, MD, FACS, Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty and facelift together are safe, but should not take 8 hours.
Rhinoplasty and facelift together are safe, but should not take 8 hours. For 35 years I have routinely done both of these surgeries with the average time being 4 hours.
This is quite safe under general anesthesia if the surgeon and staff are set up to do this! (Toby Mayer, MD, Beverly Hills Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty at Same Time as Facelift
All surgery involves risks which increase especially when the length of surgery extends beyond 6 hours. Informed consent of the potential risks vs benefits of separating the two surgeries vs doing everything at once is critical for the best decision.
In my practice I would recommend surgery less than 6 hours for safety reasons. On the other hand, I am usually able to do both the rhinoplasty and facelift within that time period. (Larry S. Nichter, MD, MS, FACS, Orange County Plastic Surgeon)
Combining rhinoplasty and facelift
I do not recommend any surgery that will take eight hours under general anesthesia because the complication rate is significantly increased beyond 5.5 hours. I personally do not like to combine rhinoplasty with facelift as these are both procedures which require judgment and attention to detail. The swelling from the rhinoplasty may undermine the facelift outcome. I agree that your friend should seek a second opinion. (Robert L. Kraft, MD, New York Plastic Surgeon)
Multiple operations
I only do out patient office surgery and need to have the patient stay 2 hours in recovery before going home or to a recpovery facility. I would not get home until 9pm. It it is a strain for the surgeon it is a compromise for the patient. If the nose is a relatively simple one, yes I would do it in the same sitting as a facelift.
Total surgery time should not take more than 5 hours in my facility. The surgeon you describe may be very comfortable doing 8 hours of surgery. I imagine he is very energetic and does his work in a hospital with the patient staying overnight. (Sheldon S. Kabaker, MD, Oakland Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty and facelift together
If your surgeon feels comfortable that he/she can be at the top of their game in doing both then the procedure itself is not a problem .The main concern is where it is being done, who’s doing the anesthesia and what are the plans for post op monitoring and recovery. Whenever I have done long procedures like this either by myself or with other plastic surgeons doing body procedures we have done them only in the hospital and kept the patient there overnight. (Michael L. Schwartz, MD, West Palm Beach Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Facelift & Rhinoplasty
Many Cosmetic Surgeons will perform a Facelift and Rhinoplasty concurrently. However, what does “common sense” tell you (8 hours of General Anesthesia)? Answer: Separate the surgery into two shorter procedures and consider I.V sedation with local anesthesia. (Robert Shumway, MD, San Diego Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty and facelift are a safe combination
Combined procedures such as facelift and rhinoplasty are quite common and safe and can mean less time devoted to recovery. The eight hours might be a misunderstanding as the time under anesthesia would be longer than acceptable in an outpatient or office based procedure. Perhaps a red flag here. (Peter E. Johnson, MD, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty at the same time as a facelift
If the surgeon is comfortable with doing both procedures at the same time it is really not a problem.
The length of surgery is not a concern as long as it is being done in a good facility and that your friend is watched closely afterwards until it is clear that she can be on her own. (Ronald Schuster, MD, Baltimore Plastic Surgeon)
Facelift and Rhinoplasty
A Face-lift and Rhinoplasty can be performed at the same time. Having said that ,while I believe it is safe, I personally do not like to perform a large surgery with a Rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is a finesse operation and for me personally I prefer not to link it to a large secondary procedure. (Jay M. Pensler, MD, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)
I would highly recommend not having 8 hours of general anasthesia for an elective procedure. This sounds like way too much time for a rhinoplasty and facelift. Complications rate goes up after 3 hours of general anastheisa. Both procedures should take maximum 6 hours and be performed under local sedation. Find another surgeon. (Oleh Slupchynskyj, MD, FACS, New York Facial Plastic Surgeon)
