Can I still get a rhinoplasty if I have glaucoma?
Rhinoplasty and glaucoma
Oct 21, 2018
I am glad to hear that your glaucoma is well controlled. Prior to any rhinoplasty procedure, I would recommend getting clearance from your ophthalmologist, in addition to notifying your surgeon. Eye injury during rhinoplasty is extremely rare, and the risk of ocular complications depends on the specific rhinoplasty techniques used.
Best wishes,
Leslie Irvine, M.D.
How can the small bump on one side of nose after rhinoplasty be fixed?
Bump after rhinoplasty
Oct 21, 2018
It is somewhat difficult to tell without examining you in person, but you could have a small nasal tip bossae, caused by buckling or shifting of nasal tip cartilages as the skin heals and “shrink-wraps” around the nose. I would recommend seeing a facial plastic surgeon so that she or he can feel the tip cartilages to better assess it and decide next steps, which may be a revision surgery vs. injections vs. no treatment.
Best wishes,
Leslie Irvine, M.D.
Why are my ears pointy? Can this be fixed?
Otoplasty for pointy ears
Sep 14, 2017
Dear Cowboys2017, An otoplasty (or ear reshaping surgery) could help correct the shape of your ears. There are many different techniques that can be used, and most likely you would need some sutures with either scoring or removal of a little bit of cartilage, ideally through incisions on the back of the ear so they are hidden. These cases can be challenging so it is important to see a surgeon with a lot of experience with otoplasty. Best, Dr. Irvine
Eye lift v brow lift, what would be a better option for the excess skin in my inner corner?
Brow lift vs. Blepharoplasty
Aug 29, 2017
Based on your photo it looks as though you would likely benefit from an upper blepharoplasty to remove skin and also fat from the inner corners of your eyes. As for the brow, ideally the brow should sit just above the orbital rim. Your brow may be just slightly low centrally. It is possible that you could get away with an upper blepharoplasty and some botox to the glabella, especially if you are nervous about possible side effects of a revision brow lift. And then if you still…
I’m considering getting fillers for my lips. Would that be right for the results I’m looking for? (ph
Fillers for lip refinement
Aug 23, 2017
Your lips have a beautiful and youthful shape. A little hyaluronic acid filler to the outer parts of the upper lip is a good place to start, and it can be blended with the central part of the lip to give a natrual, fuller, and smooth result. After an in-person examination, I would probably start with Volbella but the experience of the injector is more important than the product used and there are many good hyaluronic acid fillers for lips on the market.
Best wishes,
Dr. Irvine
How Long Does a Facelift Last?
Facelift longevity
Aug 22, 2017
For most people, a facelift lasts 5-10 years. This depends on many factors such as skin quality and elasticity, genetics, environmental stressors, and the type of lift that was performed.
The aging process continues after a facelift, but it restarts from an earlier set point, so you should hopefully always look at least 5 to 10 years younger than your actual age.
Sleeping Position After Rhinoplasty?
Sleeping position after rhinoplasty
Aug 21, 2017
I recommend that all patients sleep with their head elevated on 2-4 pillows and ideally on their back for at least 2 weeks after rhinoplasty surgery. However, I also believe that sleep is important for mental and physical recovery so after the first postoperative week I am a little more lenient when necessary. Best of luck with your recovery!
Am I able to make a smaller version of my nose via rhinoplasty?
Tip rhinoplasty
Aug 21, 2017
Based on your photos it may be possible to make your tip smaller. It is critical in rhinoplasty to make sure that the nose fits the rest of the face and that the tip of the nose is in harmony with the upper two-thirds of the nose. Another consideration in young women like yourself is the healing of the skin over the tip. Thick skin can cause a significant amount of swelling, which can be especially pronounced and may take up to 2 (or even 3) years to completely resolve. Best of luck with…
Is It Possible That With Age, My Nose Is Growing Larger?
Nasal changes with age
Aug 21, 2017
The nose does change with age, however you are far too young to have these noticeable changes yet.
– Skin: thins over the upper 2/3rds of the nose, making the appearance of a dorsal hump more prominent. Also the lower third of the nose looks more bulbous because of relatively thicker skin.
– Bony framework: the pyriform aperture, the triangular bone on which the nose sits, recedes, which can make the nose look relatively bigger or more projected.
– Cartilage and soft tissue: the ala,…
My lower brow makes me look angry, what’s the best way to fix it?
Brow treatment
Aug 21, 2017
You may be a candidate for an endoscopic brow lift. For this surgery, between 2 and 5 small incisions are made behind your hairline to lift your brows gently and symmetrically. It is important to be careful with this surgery, because lifting the central part of the brow too much can give a surprised look, and completely removing the glabellar muscles can make the brows move further apart.
Another option you could try, which would be subtle but noticeable, is botox to the glabella (the…
Botox or Buccal Fat removal! Help!
Botox or buccal fat removal
Aug 18, 2017
Dear cmccormick,
There are several ways to reshape the lower face in young people like yourself.
– It is likely that you would be a candidate for buccal fat removal. One downside of buccal fat removal is that it can make patients look skeletonized as they get older. During the consultation, I find it helpful to see pictures of a patient’s mother, in order to see if they are genetically predisposed to have a thinned out face with age. If so, I do not recommend the procedure…
Facelift Recovery
Facelift Recovery
Aug 17, 2017
I generally tell patients to take 2 weeks off of work and activities for facelift recovery. Some patients with long hair to cover their incisions are able to go back to work after 7 days, but recovery depends on your skin type, other underlying health factors, and what type of surgery was done.
If it is okay with your surgeon and deemed safe for you, hyperbaric oxygen can also help with post-facelift swelling and healing, and I recommend arnica for bruising.
Rhinoplasty Scar Tissue
Rhinoplasty scar tissue
Aug 15, 2017
It is normal to have scar tissue under the skin following a rhinoplasty. However, too much scar tissue, especially in the supratip (the area just above the tip), can cause a visible and unattractive appearance of the nose. The best way to treat this is by injections of 5-Fluorouracil and a low concentration of steroid while the nose is still healing. It is important to be very careful with these medications, however, and to have them injected only by an experienced…
When to Stop Drinking Alcohol Prior to Surgery?
Alcohol before and after rhinoplasty
Aug 15, 2017
I ask all patients to stop drinking alcohol and caffeine and to stop taking herbal supplements for 2 weeks before and after rhinoplasty. This helps to prevent excessive bleeding, swelling, and blood pressure fluctuations around the time of surgery.
I just had a closed rhinoplasty nearly 2 weeks ago. I notice that I can’t really smile. When can I sm
Rhinoplasty smiling
Aug 15, 2017
Hello and thank you for sharing your question! After rhinoplasty, I usually tell patients to expect their upper lip to be stiff and their smile to look and feel “weird” for approximately 3 months. This is a general guideline based on what I have observed and what patients have told me in the past. Certain factors may prolong your lip swelling and stiffness. If your surgery was a revision or if your surgeon did more manipulation at the front of the septum, your lip and…
