Is Correcting a Crooked Nose a Difficult Procedure?
Crooked Nose IS a Difficult Procedure
May 8, 2017
Rhinoplasty is frequently quoted as being the most difficult procedure in cosmetic surgery. One challenge that patients and surgeons face is the task of straightening a crooked nose.  Usually it is possible to make significant improvement in symmetry and straightness (both inside and out) -- but, making a nose perfectly straight is very difficult.  As surgeons, we do have a certain degree of control in the operating room and the goal is always to make the nose look the absolute best (...
Is It Possible That With Age, My Nose Is Growing Larger?
Nose Can Enlarge with Age
May 8, 2017
Patients frequently ask me if their nose will continue to grow as they get older.  The nose can appear to become bigger as patients age, however, it is unusual for the nose to actual grow after reaching adulthood. Rather, the support structures of the nose tend to loosen or weaken and the nose tip can droop, which makes the nose appear to look bigger. Additionally, changes in skin texture - and in particular skin thickening - can also make the nose look large as patients age.
Two Doctors Performing a Septoplasty/rhinoplasty?
BEWARE -- Choose your surgeon carefully!
Aug 17, 2012
Any good rhinoplasty surgeon should be equally skilled at addressing BOTH the functional and the cosmetic issues. This fact is much more important than whether the surgeon is designated as a PS or an ENT.

There are plenty of excellent ENTs who can adequately address the internal stuctures to improve breathing but lack the expertise in the cosmetic component. Similarly, there are plenty of excellent PS who are not skilled at addressing the functional part...

Simulated Nose Versus Real Nose?
3D Rhinoplasty Imaging
Dec 6, 2011
Pre-operative rhinoplasty imaging, especially 3D imaging, is a valuable tool for both the patient and the doctor. For the patient, imaging can help patients understand the effect that changing the nose has on the overall appearance. For the surgeon, imaging is an important part of the preoperative analysis and planning.

Patients and their surgeon should agree upon the goals for surgery, and imaging can help ensure that those goals and expectations are mutually understood. While imaging...

Can Swelling of the Columella and Tip Cause a Tip to Look More Upturned?
Swelling After Rhinoplasty
Jun 24, 2011
It is very common for the nose to look more upturned (rotated) than it really is. This is particularly true during the first two weeks following surgery because of the degree of swelling in the skin of the nose. Also, some patients expereince swelling of the upper lip in the area immediately below the columella (column of tissue between the nostrils). When this area swells, it can distort the angle of rotation and make it appear that it is tilted up more.

Be patient,...

Who is Considered the Best Rhinoplasty Surgeon in Chicago Area from an Expert's Point of View?

What is This Bump Inside my Nostril After Closed Rhinoplasty?
After Closed Rhino
Jun 24, 2011
Suture reaction is a common occurance following any surgery. The body reacts to any foreign object by trying to break it down and this results in inflammation. Most likely this represents a normal reaction to a dissolvable suture, but I recommend that you visit with your surgeon to make sure this does not represent an infection.
Will Nose Appear Different After Getting Bumped 6 Months After Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Nasal Trauma After Rhinoplasty
Jan 10, 2011
In the absence of a new nasal fracture (broken nose) or dislodging of the septum from underneath the nasal  bones, minimal trauma to the bridge of the nose should not cause and permanent changes to the shape of the nose. It is fairly common for uneven swelling to result from a forceful blow to the nose -- this may take several weeks to resolve.

Please follow-up with your surgeon and have him evaluate your nose to make certain that no permanent damage was done.

Alternatives to Rhinoplasty for Nose Bulge from Mohs
Correcting Nasal Deformities After Mohs Surgery
Jan 3, 2011
There are several alternatives to correct contour deformities of the nose that arise after Mohs surgery.  These include a formal rhinoplasty to reshape the nose, fillers to fill slight depressions or camoflauge irregularities, local flaps to rearrange the soft tissue (skin) envelope, or soft tissue augmentation (building up) -- a thin layer of scalp tissue, called fascia, is frequently used.

The extent of the deformity will dictate which technique will provide the best result...

Why Does Rhinoplasty Surgery Not Allow my Nose to Be Made As Small As I Want?
Reduction Rhinoplasty: Making the Nose Smaller
Aug 31, 2010
It is possible for correction of a large nose to appear natural as long as the nose is proportional and in balance with the other facial features. But, there are some limits to how small a nose can be made. Skin thickness is the major determinant. The nasal framework can be made as small as possible, but the skin must be able to redrape around and conform to that framework in order to look attractive.

One way to gain a better understanding of how rhinoplasty would change your...

Rhinoplasty to Improve Front View of Nose?
Rhinoplasty Can Produce a Natural, Attractive Tip
Aug 31, 2010
When performed correctly, rhinoplasty can reshape the tip to produce a natural, attactive nose -- from any angle. The best rhinoplasty is one which produces a nose that both looks good (and functions well) regardless from where it is viewed.

The best way for patient to gain a better understanding of how their nose might look after rhinoplasty surgery is to visit with a surgeon who uses computer imaging to set the goals for surgery. Recently, 3D rhinoplasty imaging has become...
