Tissue expanders are usually placed to assist with the breast reconstruction process. Tissue expanders are gradually filled until you are happy with the volume and size, and they are replaced with a permanent implant of your choice. With that being said, you can have the tissue expander removed at anytime. Make sure you consult with a plastic surgeon who is board certified and discuss all of your options. Best of luck to you!

Typically patients who have had breast cancer are able to still get a reduction and or lift. Depending on the type of cancer, treatment, and clearance from your breast oncologist would determine how soon your breast reduction/lift would be able to take place. Typically patients who undergo breast reconstruction with silicone implants are always under general anesthesia. These cases can sometimes be long and uncomfortable for the patient if they are under a conscious IV sedation. I would strongly recommend that when you do have your reconstruction surgery it is under general anesthesia with a credentialed and certified anesthesia provider. I also recommend that you find a plastic surgeon who is board certified. I hope this helps. Best of luck to you!

Typically patients who have had breast reconstruction with implants are able to go back to their normal routines once they are fully healed. This would include things such as weight lifting and playing the violin. Typically patients who are 17 months post-op should not be experiencing tenderness or pain. This could be a capsular contracture, but is definitely abnormal and needs to be addressed. My recommendation is to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon and get a thorough assessment. If it is a capsular contracture you have different options as far as treatment. You can get a breast revision to do a capsulectomy and exchange your implants. I hope this helps. Best of luck to you!

Typically people are okay for public transportation at two weeks post-op, but healing can range greatly from patient to patient. It is best to closely follow instructions that were given to you by your surgeon post-operatively. Often the fastest and cheapest operation is not the correct operation.  Rushed consults and fast operations usually lead to regrettable results.  Fast surgery, like fast food, will be more affordable but may leave patients with a bigger problem than they started with.  Revision breast surgery for a deformity can be more costly than doing the right thing the first time around.  If the surgeon is good, he or she probably spends more time on the details and will not be the cheapest in town….

After child birth, abdominal fascia can stretch and become lax.  Patients develop variable amounts of skin laxity.  For any skin laxity above the umbilicus, a mini abdominoplasty is going to be inadequate.  I usually do liposuction with almost every abdominoplasty – unless the patient is very thin.   For patients with significant laxity around and above the umbilicus, the mini abdominoplasty frequently falls short on contouring the upper abdomen.  Make sure to see an ABPS plastic surgeon.

Infection is uncommon, but it is a risk with any surgery.  Post operative infections usually present 5-7 days after surgery.  Typically, pain and swelling is at a maximum for the first few days after surgery.  Normally, pain and swelling gradually improves as you heal.  Early signs of infection include increasing redness or pain after this time.  Patients should improve with time, and not get worse.  It is very important to have close follow up with your ABPS Board Certified Plastic Surg…

Scars take time to mature.  This can take over a year to achieve.  Typically by 9-12 months, post operative scars have reached a significant level of scar maturity.  Type III collagen gets converted to Type I collagen by the fibroblast cells and capillary angiogenesis regresses.  This creates a softer and less red scar in most patients.  I usually recommend that my patients wait at least this time before deciding on a tattoo.  I actually prefer that patients see me on a case to case basis …
