Cannot breathe properly 7 months post rhinoplasty
Seek evaluation
Jul 6, 2016
If you are still having trouble breathing 7 months after surgery, it is not a cold. There can be a number of contributing factors. I recommend an evaluation by a surgeon who specializes both in functional and cosmetic issues. In some cases the rhinoplasty specialist will seek the help of an ENT colleague who specializes in “inside the nose” issues. However in your situation there may be some issues directly related to the surgery that they might not appreciate fully. A cosmetic rhinoplasty…
I had Rhinoplasty surgery 6 days ago and only my one nostril has been bleeding. Any suggestions?
Bleeding after Rhinoplasty
Jul 6, 2016
Not sure exactly why you are bleeding. There can still be some intermittent bleeding but “constant” bleeding is unusual. I would recommend that you contact your surgeon and let them know.
Am I a good rhinoplasty candidate?
Candidate
Jul 6, 2016
You seem to be a good candidate for rhinoplasty. Of course, the next step would be an office visit with a rhinoplasty specialist. A skillful rhinoplasty specialist will carefully listen to your concerns, examine you, perform computer imaging, and then with this information, they will be able to give you a more educated opinion as to whether you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty, what would be involved, etc… Good luck!
What type of rhinoplasty would be suggested to correct breathing and appearance?
Type of Rhinoplasty
Jul 6, 2016
Your pictures demonstrate a left caudal septal deviation, this is causing a significant obstruction to the left side. Whether or not there is another issue as described by your family doctor, that would require an examination in the office. Keep in mind that there may be some internal structures hat may be factors in your nasal breathing. For your appearance, we recommend a discussion complemented by computer imaging so that surgeon and patient can agree on a shared surgical goal. We…
How Much Downtime Should I Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Downtime
Jul 6, 2016
I have operated on a number of professional models, who have related to me that after surgery by me they have been able to go back to work in 1-2 weeks. (Some felt ready in 1 week, some in 2). We do a number of things in all patients to minimize down time, and patients have been generally pleased. Of course this can vary from surgeon to surgeon and you should ask your surgeon what they would expect your down time will be.
How Soon Can You Wear Sunglasses After Rhinoplasty?
Sunglasses
Jul 6, 2016
Perhaps we are over-cautious but we advise no glasses of any kind for 6 weeks from the day of surgery. Why take chances?
How Long Should Bruising Last After Rhinoplasty?
Bruising
Jul 6, 2016
We find that about 95% of our patients under 30 get minimal or no bruising and about 95% of patients over 40 get some notable bruising. In our patients, bruising usually resolves over approximately 10 days. Of course from time to time some discoloration can linger. Generally this resolves on its own over an additional week or two. Occasionally a lightening cream can help. Avoid the sun and speak with your surgeon! Good luck and don’t worry!
Blowing Nose After Rhinoplasty?
Blowing Nose After Surgery
Jul 6, 2016
We instruct patients that they may blow their nose lightly beginning 2 weeks after surgery. Don’t overdo it though – if you blow too hard you can cause a nosebleed or even some injury. And remember, there is still a lot of swelling on the inside of your nose too, and you can’t blow swelling out of your nose!
Will Removing Nose Splint Early Affect Rhinoplasty Results?
Removing Splint
Jul 6, 2016
In my practice the nasal splint is routinely removed in 4-5 days. Every so often a patient will find the splint irritating and we will remove the splint early. Of course, you must be careful once the splint has been removed! But in my experience there has been no adverse effect from early splint removal.Do not put the splint back on. If you were narrowing the nose you would not expect an obvious result at this early stage due to swelling. And if you have any questions you should consult…
Hitting my nose 6 month post op?
Post-Op
May 31, 2016
From your description, it does not sound as if you significantly injured your nose. If your nose hurts, but looks the same to you, feels essentially the same, and no change in breathing, then surely everything will be okay. No, your nose will not grow bigger due to this injury.Of course, the safest thing to do would be to see a local rhinoplasty surgeon to let them see and feel your nose. That will certainly give you the most reassurance and is the best medical advice.
Wonky splint – will this effect my final result?
Post-Op
May 31, 2016
I agree, your splint is a little wonky! But do not worry – I do not believe this will affect the outcome of the surgery. I do believe that you should call your surgeon and express your concern. That is always good advice – your surgeon will want to know about any concerns and anxieties you have so that he can address them. The idea is for you to have the best experience you possibly can.
Swelling and ice
Icing with not help at this stage
May 31, 2016
Icing will not help at this stage. For any injury, including a surgery, ice is typically used for that day only. Afterwards, some use it for a few days more. After that, ice provides no substantial benefit.I offer oral prednisone to my patients for the immediate after-surgery phase of healing. I find that meticulous surgery with minimal bleeding, combined with oral steroids, results in speedy recovery. Some of my patients also use Arnica. Nearly 95% of my patients under 30 have little or…
My husband hit my nose in cast 5 days post op from surgery. Can bones shift from this?
Injury after surgery
May 31, 2016
Well, an injury after surgery can cause the bones to shift. Over the years, having performed thousands of nasal surgeries, an occasional patient has had this sort of injury whether from spouse or boyfriend, or a big dog, or their toddler, or from a variety of mishaps. Fortunately, most of the time no injury occurs. On occasion some shifting of the bones occurs but can be addressed with massage, as directed by me (or in your case, your surgeon). There has been an occasion where an injury…
Uneven nostrils, is it because of the swelling?
Swelling
May 31, 2016
The asymmetry in your nostrils that is shown here can certainly be from swelling. Rhinoplasty is on just one nose but there are two sides! If the surgical dissection proceeded a little more smoothly on one side compared to the other, or if some bleeding was encountered on one side that required cautery, or if one side simply responded to the surgery with a little more swelling than the other, those could all explain this sort of asymmetry. One week after surgery is VERY early. So be patient…
What is the Protocol for Fixing Newly Broken Nose?
Broken Nose Treatment
May 3, 2016
The “textbook” answer is that it should be fixed within the first two weeks before the bones begin to really heal. However, in my practice I have reduced nasal fractures at every possible time – immediately, 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 years, 20 years! The primary difference is that if the bones have healed, then the fracture lines need to be recreated by “re-breaking” the nose. I have not noticed any difference in the outcomes of these different groups, in my hands. A surgeon who performs frequent…
