Does a submental lipectomy leave a scar?
Submental Lipectomy Scar
Mar 3, 2018
Getting rid of the unwanted fat under the chin is a very common request in my office.  There are several options available:Submental LipectomySubmental LIposuctionKybellaCoolsculptingEach of these offers their own pros and cons and each option is suited best to certain patients and not others.  Regarding Submental Lipectomy, this is a procedure where a 1.5 cm incision is made in the crease under your chin.  This scar tends to heal very well and is almost unnoticeable.  In fact, about 25% of …
Antibiotics after rhinoplasty: Bactrim seems to be giving me intense headaches.
Antibiotics and the nose
Feb 23, 2018
Although we routinely give antibiotics for a few days following rhinoplasty, there is no solid data in the medical literature to support it.  However, you are receiving antibiotics for a different reason: a boil, which is typically a “staph” infection of the skin.  That is a much more serious reason to take them.  I would recommend finishing the course of antibiotics that were prescribed to you.  Having a bit of bleeding from the nose is very unlikely to result in any change in your resu…
I had endoscopic brow lift and blepharoplasty 17 months ago. Will the feeling ever come back?
Supraorbital Nerve injury
Feb 22, 2018
During Browlift surgery, the skin of the forehead is raised upwards.  Unfortunately, the Supraorbital Nerve can be stretched during this surgery.  This nerve is responsible for providing sensation to the forehead and top of the head.  So long as the nerve isn’t cut, it will return to normal function.  If you have still have numbness after 18 months, I would recommend seeing a neurologist.  They can test the nerve to see if it is working properly.  Good luck!
Do you save money by combining procedures?
Cost savings in combined procedures
Sep 19, 2016
There are several benefits to combining procedures, if possible.  A primary advantage is cost savings.  There will often be a reduction in anesthesia charge.  The most expensive parts of the procedure are at the beginning and end. While the total length of a combined procedure may be the same, there will be 1 less ‘beginning’ and 1 less ‘end.’ In addition, often the surgeon will offer a reduction on the surgeon’s fees if the patient schedules more than one procedure. The surgeon has an in…
Can rib cartilage be used for closed rhinoplasty?
Rib Cartilage and Closed Rhinoplasty
Jun 23, 2015
Rib cartilage is often used in revision rhinoplasty surgery. The reasons to use rib cartilage include:TONS of useable cartilageStrong cartilageMinimal scar at the donor siteIts your own tissueUsing your own cartilage is always preferable to using cadaver cartilage or synthetic material. If septal cartilage is present, that should be used first (if there’s enough and its straight). Many surgeon’s don’t like using rib because they are afraid of getting a pneumothorax (collapsed…
What is considered “ideal” nostril show from the front, for a woman?
Nostril show on frontal view
Nov 19, 2014
Excellent question. There is no accepted “millimeter” amount of nostril show that is considered ideal on the frontal view. What is often discussed is a gentle “sea gull-in-flight contour” of the nostrils and columella of the nose (the flesh between the nostrils). This contour and the amount of nostril that you see on frontal view can be affected during rhinoplasty by manipulations of the nasal tip cartilages. One thing to think about is head position when looking at your own…

Vitamins and Surgery
Jun 16, 2014
Always consult your surgeon regarding taking vitamins before Facelift surgery. Interestingly, taking vitamins is fairly a controversial issue. The B-Vitamins don’t thin blood, so that isn’t the main reason to stop them. Rather, there is enough evidence to suggest that vitamins aren’t necessary for the vast majority of Americans. We eat a varied enough diet that supplemental vitamins are not helpful and can cause harm. In fact, a 2013 study from Johns Hopkins found that all the research…

Necklift results
Jun 11, 2014
The “necklift” procedure (or mini-lift) means different things to different surgeons. There are innumerable variations of this procedure. What is true among all of these procedures is that a necklift is a less aggressive version of a facelift. Invariably, this also means less results. It is difficult to say of your results are normal without seeing your “before” photos or knowing what technique was performed. Generally speaking, however, the necklift produces fairly modest…
Is smoking marijuana 1 week before deep plane Facelift dangerous?
Marijuana and Surgery
Jun 10, 2014
As a Facial Plastic Surgeon in Denver, Colorado, I am often asked about the effects of Marijuana and surgery. The effects of Marijuana on healing are unknown. There is one study showing that healing around titanium dental implants is harmed when marijuana smoke is inhaled. However, this study was done in rats and was looking at smoke, not vaporized THC.The truth is, no one can answer your question with any supporting data. Undoubtedly, many of my patients use Marijuana after my…
Hi, is it possible to have a Facelift after surgery for a Pleopmorphic Adenoma?
Facelift After Parotid Surgery
Mar 11, 2014
Pleomorphic Adenoma is a benign tumor of the Parotid salivary gland that lives in front of your ear. To remove a Pleomorphic Adenoma, your Otolaryngologist most often needs to remove the outer half of the parotid gland. That half of the gland normally protects the Facial Nerve during Facelift. Consequently, having the parotid surgery puts the Facial Nerve at risk during a Facelift. You absolutely may have facelift surgery after having a parotid surgery, though there are…
HELP!!! Can i use someone else’s septal cartilage for Asian rhinoplasty revision? What are the risks
Cartilage options
Mar 5, 2014
While using your own septal cartilage is best, there are other options. These include:Ear cartilageRib cartilageCadaver cartilageSynthetic implantsEach option has inherent advantages and disadvantages. If at all possible, your own cartilage should be used. If a large volume of cartilage is required, as it seems is the case for you, then rib cartilage is preferred. While it seems like a bigger surgery, this is generally a straightforward and routine procedure. Rib…
Megan good is a BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. Could I have a nose like hers?
New Nose?
Mar 1, 2014
Rhinoplasty surgery makes changes to the skeleton of the nose to help a person look or breathe better. If you are considering rhinoplasty, its very important to understand what are appropriate expectations of the results. While we can do many different things to change the shape of the nose, it will still be your nose in the end. What I often tell patients is that I’m not giving you someone else’s nose, I’m making your nose look better. With that in mind, the maneuvers that…
What is the best way to remove nasolabial folds?
Treating Cheek Folds
Feb 22, 2014
Fortunately there are many safe and effective options for treating cheek folds. The most popular treatments are soft tissue fillers, Sculptra and abdominal fat transfer.Soft tissue fillers (Radiesse, Voluma, Juvederm, etc.) were the second most common minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure in 2012 and over 2 million procedures were performed (American Society of Plastic Surgery Statistics). Many products are available and they are all reasonably effective. The advantage of using…
What can I do to get rid of this scar on my forehead?
Forehead Scars
Feb 20, 2014
There are several reasons why a particular scar may be visible or unsightly. Characteristics of scars that can catch the eye include:DepressedRuns perpendicular to creases or wrinkles in the areaDiscolored (brown, red)RaisedYour scar appears not to run in the direction of the forehead wrinkles, which are horizontal. It is also depressed, which creates a shadow that draws attention. To correct these problems, I’d recommend first re-excising the scar to close it horizontally, so…
Rhinoplasty and botox
Botox Rhinoplasty touch up.
Feb 14, 2014
The Plunging Tip Deformity is a rare problem, but a distressing one to those people that have it. This occurs when the nasal tip drops down when you smile. It is caused by overactive muscles, including the Levator Labii Superioris Alaque Nasi (LLSAN, the longest named muscle in the body, BTW) and the Depressor Septi Nasi.Correcting the problem involves cutting the Depressor Septi Nasi, which is close to the incision made during an Open Rhinoplasty. However, this often doesn’t work…
