Nose getting longer…not bigger
First of all, I did not understand the comment you made in your question with respect to your surgeon not wanting to do anything unless you pay for the cosmetic side.
However, I do agree that you should have one definitive operation on your nose not multiple small ones. Seek out surgeons that will correct your functional deformity (deviated septum) and the cosmetic portion at the same time.
Every time your nose is instrumented, there is a risk for scar tissue etc. With respect to the bigger issue, your nose doesn’t actually get bigger. Your nose is supported by 5 cartilagenous structures.
As we age, the support mechanisms loosen up a bit . This causes the cartilage to stretch from each other causing lengthening of the nose.
This makes the tip droop and causes the nose to become longer. A rhinoplasty will fix this, and if done properly, will prevent aging in the future. Therefore, you will have a perky nose at age 90 🙂 (Raghu Athre, MD, Houston Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Nose growing bigger: Rhinoplasty may help…
Ladies’ noses generally stop growing at age 16. What that means is that the underlying structure that give the nose its size and shape (i.e. the bone and cartilage) do not continue the grow.
However, the tissue attachments between the cartilage and bone tend to weaken with time. This can cause the nasal tip to drop. When the tip drops, the bridge of the nose may look more prominent (so the hump “comes back”).
In some, this loss of support also leads to breathing problems. Rhinoplasty can help restore nasal tip support and produce a nice harmony between the height of the nasal bridge and nasal tip. Permanent sutures are used to shape and support the tip and any residual bump on the bridge can be reduced. There are other causes of a nose changing size with time.
The muscle, fat, and skin overlying the bone and cartilage generally thin with aging. However is some, the sebaceous glands in the nose begin to grow too much and cause a condition called Rhinophyma (which is closely related to a more common condition called Rosacea). Rhinophyma will result in changes in the texture and thickness of the nasal skin and can be treated both medically and surgically. Visit with a facial plastic surgeon for more information. (Anand D. Patel, MD, )
Nose getting bigger with age Help!
Your nose is not really getting bigger its just looks that way. As you age and you loose tip support your nose appears bigger because there is a more prominent hump when the tip droops. If your tip were supported it would not appear that way. Rhinoplasty surgery is a great way to change that appearance. (Carlos Wolf, MD, Miami Facial Plastic Surgeon)
The nose can appear to get bigger as we age…
As we age, the soft tissues in the nose can weaken which can allow the tip to droop some and the nose to look bigger. (Andrew Miller, MD, Edison Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Nose enlarging
Growth of the female nasal skeleton is complete, usually by age 16 or so. Beyond that, possible causes of nasal enlargement are pathologic (e.g. tumor), soft tissue thickening (e.g. sebaceous gland hypertrophy or localized fluid retention), or perceptual.
Rhinoplasty is a great operation for a beautiful woman such as yourself with small nasal contour irregularities, and you keep the result for the rest of your life. It can transform the attractive woman into the captivating woman.
Do your homework and find a surgeon who consistently achieves results for other patients that appeal to you. (Steve Laverson, MD, San Diego Plastic Surgeon)
Nose Bigger with Age
The nose stops growing in females between ages of 14-16, and in males 16-18. There are several factors why the nose appears larger as we continue to age:
- Loss of elasticity – However, as we age all of our tissues become less elastic, which means tissues start to hang which were once firm. This is true for other body parts, as it is true for the cartilage in the nose. When the nose starts to hang more, the nose will look longer, less projected, and can make the dorsum look larger.
- Loss of facial volume – With age we lose facial volume. As we lose facial volume, the nose will look relatively larger in proportion to face which is smaller.
- Skin issues – Most of the time, the skin around the face and nose becomes thinner with age. This can make bumps along the bridge of the nose more visibile. In some cases, the skin does become thicker, seen in patients with rhinophyma, which occurs along the nasal tip. (Anil R. Shah, MD, Chicago Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Nose Changes & Rhinoplasty
The nose typically stops growing between 14 and 16 years of age in most patients. Although the nose doesn’t continue to grow, it does continue to change.
Gravity can have a significant impact on the nose and over the course of time, it can cause the nasal tip soft tissue to sag.
This can change the nasal appearance and dramatically impact facial aesthetics. Although, the nasal problems that you describe are not related to growth, they can still be addressed with rhinoplasty surgery.
For this reason, consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon with rhinoplasty experience is appropriate. (Richard J. Bruneteau, MD, Omaha Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty can help shape your nose
Noses tend to change shape over really long periods of time (many many years). A rhinoplasty surgeon can help determine what can be done to achieve your goals.
Some surgeons even do digital morphing to help you see what you may be able to look like after surgery.
This is an estimation of your result, but not an exact prediction, as the nose tends to heal in its own individual way. (Richard A. Zoumalan, MD, Los Angeles Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Your nose stops growing after you experience puberty. Most likely you are just experiencing natural changes from aging and it may be affecting the way you view yourself.
I would recommend obtaining a few opinions from board certified facial plastic surgeons about a rhinoplasty procedure.
Tell them your concerns so you get the best possible results. (Carlo Honrado, MD, FACS, Los Angeles Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Cosmetic rhinoplasty for bony nasal dorsum
Rhinoplasty will correct hypertrophy of the nasal bone and cartilage. Based on your consultation with your plastic surgeon, it seems as though you are a candidate for a cosmetic rhinoplasty. (Raffy Karamanoukian, MD, FACS, Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty Restores Nose Proportions
It is true that the nose does grow as we age. Cosmetic Rhinoplasty can restore proportion to your nose and balance with your features. Be sure your surgeon understands as specifically as possible your aesthetic goals. Imaging can be a great tool for communication. (Paul C. Zwiebel, MD, Denver Plastic Surgeon)
Nose Getting Bigger – Will Rhinoplasty Help
Your photograph only shows one view but you do appear to have a widened dorsum and by history a dorsal hump.
I think a rhinoplasty could improve the appearance of your nose and if you have a deviated septum that impairs your breathing then you could have the procedures done simultaneously. (Paul Vitenas, Jr., MD, Houston Plastic Surgeon)
Nose getting larger
I tend to disagree withh some of the opinions stated below. Although the nasal skeleton stops growing by the age of 16-18, the cartilagenous structure of the nasal tip can comtinue to grow especially if you have a genetic predisposition.
For example, if your father or mother have a large bulbous tip, you have that genetic program. Older people often have larger noses and ears. You are an attractive woman and based on your pictures, you would be an excellent candidate for rhinoplasty. During a rhinoplasty, the nasal tip cartilages are sculpted narrowing and refining the tip. (Paul E. Chasan, MD, Del Mar Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty results
Please do not be too hypercritical of your appearance. Part of what is perceived as attractive in all of us is confidence. Don’t let a minor issue with your nose bring you down. Could you benefit from a cosmetic rhinoplasty? This is subjective, but I would say yes. Based upon your old photos, I would perform a cephalic trim and infractures to narrow the nasal base.
Based upon what you describe, a dorsal hump reduction may help. If you are uncertain about the billing practices of the doctor you saw in consultation, see another one. In fact, I would visit several until you find the one that you are confident will deliver the results you seek. Rhinoplasty is not a minor procedure, and you should take your time in choosing the right physician for you. (Jason R. Hess, MD, San Diego Plastic Surgeon)
Growing nose
Sometimes structures can change as we age. It sounds like the hump is growing due to an increased amount of growth in the cartilage and bone in that area. These changes can be easily addressed with a surgical procedure. This would not be covered by insurance. (Talmage J. Raine, MD, Champaign Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty for enlarging nose
Your nose should change as you get older, but very little after your teenage years. If you feel that your nose is not looking like you want, then a rhinoplasty is the perfect procedure for you. Discuss your concerns and goals with an experienced surgeon who can recommend what is best for you (Randy J. Buckspan, MD, Austin Plastic Surgeon)
The nose changes over a lifetime
As we age, the facial changes. Tissues change in response to gravity and the environment. The nose also undergoes changes.
The size of the nose is most often a consideration if the balance and symmetry is not present. An experienced surgeon can assess the nose to determine whether a rhinoplasty can achieve the results you desire. (Robert Mounsey, MD, Toronto Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Your nose is not growing
At your age, there is no way your nose would continue to grow from natural causes aside from a tumor. If your hump really is getting bigger, then it was due to an injury. Of course surgery will correct things. (Howard T. Bellin, MD (retired), Manhattan Plastic Surgeon)
Does the Nose Grow with Age?
I often hear from my patients that they feel their nose grows over time. Although it is not ACTUALLY growing, it can look like its growing as you age.
This is because the ligaments that hold the cartilages together stretch and sag with age (like the rest of the face).
Furthermore, the cartilages of the tip can bend over time (this is called “bossing”) and make the tip appear larger and wider. Finally, if the tip sags downwards, a bump on the top of the nose can appear more prominent.
All of these changes are generally considered cosmetic to correct, and will not be covered by insurance. (Minas Constantinides, MD, Manhattan Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Nose Shape Changing With Age
As some other plastic surgeons have pointed out here, it would be highly unlikely that your nose is actually growing. There are some rare conditions that can cause the nose to grow after you have reached adulthood, but this would be very unusual.
It is more likely that you are seeing some degree of ptosis, which means that the nose can start to droop down. This can certainly give the appearance of a wider nose and can accentuate an already present bump on the bridge. I have operated on many patients for this exact issue. With regard to your deviated septum, this is likely a completely separate issue that probably has little to do with the shape of your nose.
Make sure you consult with a plastic surgeon who has experience in doing both cosmetic and functional nose surgery – this will give you the best chance of having both issues successfully addressed in one surgical procedure. (John M. Hilinski, MD, San Diego Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Non Surgical Nose Job (Rhinoplasty) can help make a nose look smaller, better
Although using fillers on the nose can not decrease the size of a nose, it can make it look a lot better. They do this because of the following reasons:
- By placing fillers above and below the dorsal hump, the hump may be camouflaged.
- With age, the tip can lose support, starting to droop, making the nose look larger.
- Fillers in the nasal tip can support it, elevate it and make it look perkier.
- By filling in any concavities the nose can look stream-lined, less lumpy, and there fore better.
Fillers are a very nice way for an attractive person, not willing to undergo a surgical change to improve their nose. For an example of a Non Surgical Rhinoplasty, please click the link below. (David Mabrie, MD, Bay Area Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty to reduce size of nose
Your nose is not growing. A deviated septum surgery is completely separate from a rhinoplasty surgery.
If there is a deviated septum causing nasal obstruction, this is a medical condition for which the procedure is usually submitted to medical insurance.
Any cosmetic surgery such as rhinoplasty has to be paid for by the patient. Both surgeries can be done together or separately.
A rhinoplasty can certainly help reduce the size of the nose, but is cosmetic surgery and not considered to correct a deviated septum or breathing issues.
For many examples of rhinoplasty, please see the link below (William Portuese, MD, Seattle Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Noses don’t grow but may apprear larger as you age
The commonly held idea that noses still grow past your teens is false. However, bumps and nasal tips can look larger.
Like everywhere else in the body, the skin stretches as well as the ligaments that hold the nasal tip cartilages to the bones above.
As the tip of the nose falls by gravity the bump becomes more obvious from the rest of the nasal structures falling away from it.
The tip isn’t growing, it is softening and may flatten and fall for the same reasons. Rhinoplasty is an excellent way to restore a youthful nose.
Another reason why the nose may appear larger in the 20’s to 30’s is that many of us lose facial fat. As the face gets more narrow the nose appears to take up more of your face. (Steven J. Pearlman, MD, New York Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Nasal growth and rhinoplasty
The nose itself generally does not continue to grow after age 18 in women, but the loss of support and soft tissue can sometimes give it that appearance as we age. A rhinoplasty can help to reduce your dorsal hump and tip if needed. Correction of a deviated septum could be done at the same time. (Nina S. Naidu, MD, FACS, New York Plastic Surgeon)
Nasal Growth
The nose normally grows until puberty is complete. After that gravity will influence nasal appearance as gravity does in all parts of our body, although it is not likely noticeable in a young lady like yourself. If you are not happy with the appearance of you nose a rhinoplasty would be beneficial. (Richard W. Fleming, MD, Beverly Hills Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty for bigger nose
A nose will grow until you are of adult age in women this is usually by the age of 16 sometimes older. If you are unhappy with the way your nose looks, you may want to have a consultation with a plastic surgeon to consider your options. (Steven Wallach, MD, Manhattan Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty will help.
The nose can be made smaller and more balanced. It is done growing so any time you are ready to have a rhinoplasty is fine. (Toby Mayer, MD, Beverly Hills Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Nose Can Get Bigger
The change in the nose that happens with time can make it look big. There is no true new tissue growth but instead changes in the shape of the nose that can make it look very big. A traditional rhinoplasty can narrow the large bulbous tip, remove the dorsal hump and make it more appropriate for your face. (Tanveer Janjua, MD, Bedminster Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Nose growth
Your nose is not growing, but dimensions and relationships of your nose with your face may change over time. If this has occurred, I would consult with a surgeon with experience and a passion for rhinoplasty surgery and decide if rhinoplasty can offer you the changes that you seek. (Dustin L. Reid, MD, Austin Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty Will Help a Nose that Appears to be Larger with Age
You are a most beautiful woman. Rhinoplasty will address the concerns that you have with your nose. If you have not suffered any trauma to you nose, the most likely reason for your nose appearing larger is the loss of connective tissue attachments.
This allows your tip to dip and your hump to appear larger. Now there once was this kid named Pinocchio whom I consulted on, but I’m sure that the cause of his nose getting larger was not the same as yours.
Consult with a number of rhinoplasty experts, have them make sure that there is not an internal reason for your nose increasing in size and then choose your surgeon most carefully. (Michael A. Persky, MD, Encino Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Nose can be helped with rhinoplasty
You are a pretty young lady. I see a deviated and wide dorsal septum, widened nasal bones and wide strong tip cartilege. Noses tend to grow during adolescence and then later in life they lengthen. A rhinoplasty will improve your appearance, and help your self esteem. (Scott E. Kasden, MD, Dallas Plastic Surgeon)
Your nose is not getting bigger
The description of the nose getting bigger is common ,but there is no acutal nose enlargement except in a few rare conditions. As we age we lose fat from the face and that makes the nose seem bigger. Rhinoplasty can help if you do not like shape or size of your nose. (Kamran Khoobehi, MD, New Orleans Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty for big nose
The rhinoplasty procedure can address some of the issues that you are having with your nose. The procedure can correct the dorsal hump and the wide and bulbous tip.
A separate procedure, the septoplasty, can also be combined to help with breathing. (Andres Bustillo, MD, FACS, Miami Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Nasal lengthening with the aging process
While your nose does not change significantly once your reach puberty or so, it can appear longer due to several factors. The first being the weight of the skin of your nose can drag the tip downward and make the dorsum appear larger or higher.
Also, it can make a hump on the nose even more prominent. A history of trauma even mild to the dorsum can make the bony tissue in that area also grow to increased calcification. Finally, if your nose or septum is crooked that can contribute by pulling the nose to one side or the other.
A rhinoplasty in conjunction with a septoplasty is a very good way of reducing the hump no matter what the cause. (Scott Trimas, MD, Jacksonville Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty Surgery may be used to address your deviated septum, dorsal hump, and wide nose.
As you progress into your 30’s and older, your nasal tip will tend to droop (from gravity) and lose some definition (widen). This age-related droopiness of your tip will tend to worsen the appearance of a profile hump as well. The good news is that these issues are commonly improved with well-performed Rhinoplasty Surgery. Your deviated septum can be repaired, and your tip can be narrowed and rotated. Your dorsal hump can be reduced. You should consult several board-certified, experienced Rhinoplasty specialists with many photos before you proceed. (Eric M. Joseph, MD, West Orange Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty (nose job) is a good solution for hump and wide tip
There may be many different reasons for your nose getting bigger and some include the possibility of true disease but this is highly unlikeley. It is more probable that, as you age, your nose loses support and it begins to drop. This makes the hump appear more prominent and longer and the tip wider and lower.
A rhinoplasty can help to improve the appearance of your nose and restore support as well as reduce the hump.
A deviated septum surgery may do little to change the appearance of the nose and that is why the surgeon may be asking for prepayment. (Otto Joseph Placik, MD, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)
Rhinoplasty for nose growth
In a female, nasal bone growth stosp by the age of 18. After that, the nose should not get any bigger. However, the nasal shape can continue to change as we grow older.
Typically the nasal tip drops progrressibvle and can become more prominent. No nose job will definitely help with your dorsal hump but this is considered cosmetic by most plastic surgeons. (Siamak Agha, MD, PhD, FACS, Orange County Plastic Surgeon)
Your nose continues to grow throughout life.
Its actually your septum which grows. That and injuries (and these donèt necessarily have to be serious) plus gravity contribute to the nasal shape changing.
Certaqinly a dorsal hump can increase in size with time. It can also widen. As for your question regarding Srptoplasty and changes to the external change of the nose; most of the time septoplasty only alters the interior nasal channels.
If there is any external changes to the nose, its a fortunate side benefit. The majority of time a rhinoplasty needs to be also done to make the changes desired. (Oakley Smith, MD, Toronto Facial Plastic Surgeon)
