How long does it takes to heal the cartilage and columella?
Healing time after tip rhinoplasty
Feb 5, 2019
Hello and thanks for your question. In general, it takes about 6 weeks for cartilage and bone modifications in rhinoplasty to heal and be stable. Skin and mucosal incisions are healed and stable more quickly, although scar maturation goes on for about a year or so. In terms of swelling, about 2/3 to 3/4 of the swelling of the nasal tip is gone by about 6 weeks postop, and the residual swelling gradually resolves over the first postop year. Keep in contact with your...
What areas of the nose are resected when “cephalic trim” is performed?
What is Cephalic Trim?
Feb 5, 2019
Hello, and thanks for your question. In a cephalic trim, the upper part (i.e. closer to the root of the nose than the tip of the nose) of the lower lateral cartilage (the cartilages in the nasal tip) are resected. At least 6 mm of the cartilage should be left in place for structural support and stability. This technique can help to refine the nasal tip.
Can a crooked nose and uneven nostrils be fixed?
Crooked nose
Dec 7, 2018
Hello, and thanks for your question. You appear to have a septal deviation that is causing the deviation of the nose to your left and the nostril asymmetry. A septoplasty should improve this. I would advise consultation with an experience rhinoplasty surgeon.
What should I get done on my nose?
Rhinoplasty options
Dec 7, 2018
Hello, and thanks for your question. The first thing I would suggest you determine is exactly what features of your nose bother you, and their order of importance to you. That matters more than what anyone else may think. Once you have figured that out, then seek consultation with an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon, who should be able to hear your concerns and goals and then advise you on how best to achieve those goals. From your photos, it does seem that dorsal hump...

Inverted v deformity?
Dec 7, 2018
Hello, and thanks for your question. It is not possible to assess for inverted v deformity on lateral photos. Front view photos are needed. You should discuss your concerns with your rhinoplasty surgeon.
Should get surgery and if my nose really is big?
Nasal reduction?
Nov 20, 2018
Hello, and thanks for your question. Generally, patients who are healthy, have realistic expectations, and can clearly identify the issues that bother them about their nose and their order of importance are good candidates for rhinoplasty. Reduction and refinement of the nasal tip, narrowing the base of the nasal bones and the nasal tip, and reducing a dorsal hump are all very achievable goals with rhinoplasty surgery. I would seek consultation with an experienced...
Is There Any Way to Get Rhinoplasty Covered by Insurance?
Insurance coverage for rhinoplasty
Nov 20, 2018
Hello, and thanks for your question. Generally, insurance companies will only cover rhinoplasty if it is performed to address functional problems (i.e. nasal airway obstruction) or if it is part of a congenital deformity, such as cleft lip/palate. In some cases, insurance may cover only the functional aspects, such as septoplasty and turbinate reduction, while the patient will have to pay for things like tip modification, dorsal hump reduction, etc. Medical records and...
Is the tip of my nose still swollen 5 months after rhino, or is it a Polly beak deformity?
Nasal tip still swollen?
Nov 20, 2018
Hello, and thanks for your question. At 5 months postop, you certainly still have some residual swelling in the tip of the nose. Although a lot of the swelling resolves by about 6 weeks postop, the rest of the swelling takes about a year to resolve, and the tip holds on to the swelling the longest. For now, the best thing to do is be patient and keep in touch with your surgeon. You cannot really judge the final result until about a year postop. All the best.
Nose droops downward? Weird shape on side profile? What changes can be made?
Unhappy with profile view
Nov 20, 2018
Hello, and thanks for your question. From the one photo you have provided, it seems that you do have a bit of a dorsal hump, alar retraction, and slight downward rotation of the tip. In addition, if your nose plunges or droops more when you smile, and your upper lip shortens significantly, you may have a hyperactive depressor septi muscle. This, as well as the other issues, can be addressed at the time of a rhinoplasty. If you have realistic expectations, a clear idea...
Can a Hit Cause a Permanent Dorsal Hump?
"Bump" after nasal trauma
Nov 20, 2018
Hello, and thanks for your question. It is possible that trauma to the nose can cause a bump or contour irregularity of the dorsum ("bridge") of the nose if there is a fracture or cartilage displacement. If you had any nosebleed after this injury, you may have had a nasal fracture. Alternatively, what you are feeling may also be just from swelling.
Would a rhinoplasty give me my desired nose?
Candidate for rhinoplasty?
Nov 19, 2018
Hello, and thanks for your question. Yes, I think your stated goals can be achieved with a rhinoplasty. Refining and rotating the tip, narrowing the base of the nose, and correcting a plunging nasal tip are all reasonable objectives. I would seek out an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon, explain the specific issues regarding your nose that bother you and their order of importance, and allow the surgeon to advise you as to how best to achieve your goals. All the best.
I’ve heard nose fillers carry a risk of occluding blood vessels and causing blindness. Is a surgica
Fillers vs rhinoplasty
Nov 16, 2018
Hello, and thanks for your question. There is definitely a risk of complications with filler injections in the nose and peri-nasal region. Although photos would be helpful, from your written description, it sounds like a surgical rhinoplasty would be the best way for you to safely achieve your goals. Seek out an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon, who can examine you, listen to your concerns, and advise you on how best to address them.
Is rhinoplasty too risky after Mohs surgery? One surgery was 20 years ago; the other was 10 years a
Rhinoplasty after Mohs
Nov 16, 2018
It depends to some extent on where the Mohs resections were, the location of the scars, and how the wounds were closed or reconstructed. There is a risk, but it can be minimized by using a closed, or endonasal, approach rather than open rhinoplasty. Your Mohs procedures were quite a long time ago, so that helps.
Divot over right nostril after alarplasty, can a surgeon reposition a cartilage graft?
Alar modification question
Nov 16, 2018
Hello, and thanks for your question. Do you mean the cartilage graft was debrided? Was there any skin loss? Photos would be helpful. I would discuss with your surgeon, but if the deformity persists beyond one year postop, it should be revised. Without knowing more detail and seeing photos, I cannot advise you as to the best technique. However, any good, experienced rhinoplasty surgeon should be able to correct this.
This is a follow-up to my first question. Can rhinoplasty give my nose definition?
Increasing "definition" with rhinoplasty
Nov 16, 2018
Hello, and thanks for your question. Yes, refinement of the nasal tip, increasing the definition of the dorsal aesthetic lines, and correction of alar flaring can be accomplished with rhinoplasty. You should clearly identify what specific aspects of your nose bother you, list them in order of priority, and seek consultation with an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon who can then advise you on how best to achieve your goals.
