Will a deviated septum get 100% straight with surgery?
Straightening septum
May 14, 2017
Thanks for your question! While straightening the septum (and or nose) often makes noticeable improvement, it is not always perfectly straight. This can be for any number of reasons. The nose is unique in that it is made up of bone, cartilage, skin, and soft tissues. All of these tissues heal at different rates and sometimes the cartilage, especially, can re-deviate. Many surgical techniques can help minimize this issue but it is not possible to prevent it entirely in every case. In most…
Painful bump/pimple on rhinoplasty scar that is growing, what should I do?
Bump on rhinoplasty scar
May 14, 2017
Sorry you are having discomfort at your scar. Very often, a dissolvable suture is placed under the tissues in this area to relieve the tension on the overlying skin. Sometimes, the process of the stitch breaking down can cause inflammation. I recommend you follow up with your surgeon-often the stitch can easily be removed and the inflammation then resolves very quickly.
Best wishes,
I’m considering rhinoplasty for a deviated septum.
Rhinoplasty for Deviated Septum
May 13, 2017
Thanks for your question! The procedure to correct the deviated septum varies depending on the severity of the deviation. In your case, you have at least a caudal (anterior) septal deviation to the right that contributes to your asymmetric nostrils. In some cases this procedure is performed through small incisions inside the nose. If more extensive work is required, that an external rhinoplasty approach may be required. Recovery depends on the extent of surgery performed but most…
Can someone with HIV have cosmetic procedures?
HIV and Cosmetic Procedures
May 13, 2017
The short answer is absolutely! It is important to coordinate care between your surgeon and infectious disease physician to make sure your immune status is optimized.
Could I get a nose job to just remove my bump?
Dorsal hump
May 13, 2017
Thanks for your question! It is certainly possible to reduce a dorsal hump during a rhinoplasty. If you are happy with your tip then it does not necessarily need to be addressed. You should discuss your concerns with an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon to develop a plan tailored to your desired outcomes.
Good luck!
I have always been a mouth breather. Do I need a turbinate reduction?
Mouth Breathing
May 13, 2017
Thanks for your question! Mouth breathing can have multiple causes. You correctly identified your nostril asymmetry suggesting a deviation of the front part of your septum to the left. In many patients, there is additional deviation deeper in the nose. Turbinate hypertrophy can also be a contributor as can narrowing of the “nasal valves”. I suggest you schedule a consultation with a rhinoplasty surgeon experienced in functional reconstruction of the nose.
Good luck!
Finally getting my nose straightened. What’s the recovery time?
Nose Straightening
May 12, 2017
Thanks for your question. The initial recovery period is typically 7-10 days. I tell my patients that they may resume light exercise 2-3 weeks after surgery and then gradually increase their activity. While the nose is fairly stable 6-8 weeks after surgery, some residual tip swelling may last for 12 months or longer. Correcting a “curved” or crooked nose can be challenging because of the tissue memory and frequently involves a combination of osteotomies to straighten the upper bones as well…
What job could be done on my nose?
Rhinoplasty questions
May 12, 2017
Thanks for your question. First off, you are doing the right thing by scheduling a consultation. Make sure they are an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon. You have a slight prominence to your profile but the biggest issue is that your tip is poorly supported and down-turned with excess show of your columella and tip lobule. After your tip is rotated, supported, and refined, you may need very little dorsal reduction. I think you could see nice refinement in your nasal shape after…
I have money for only one surgery now unfortunately and I am not sure if I should do the nose
Chin vs. Rhinoplasty
Apr 15, 2017
You ask a very common question. The complete answer requires an in depth, in person consultation. Based on your pictures, however, I think you would be better served if the rhinoplasty is performed first. You will have a more balanced facial profile going this route than if you had the chin surgery first and you may find that after the rhinoplasty, you are not as concerned with your chin position.

Nostril reshaping. Can an alar rim graft and an alar base reduction be done at the same time?
Alar rim graft and alar base reduction
Apr 15, 2017
In answer to your question, both alar rim graft and alar base reduction can be performed during the same rhinoplasty. An alar rim graft can correct weaknesses of the alar rim or can help to support a deep soft tissue triangle. The alar base reduction should be conservative because once performed, the tissue cannot be put back.

I am 10 days post septorhinoplasty and can’t open my mouth fully. How long until this resolves
Upper lip after rhinoplasty
Apr 12, 2017
It is very common for the upper lip to have decreased elevation with smiling after rhinoplasty. This is particularly true after working on the nasal tip. It relates to swelling in the area and generally starts to improve within a few weeks. I typically ask my patients to avoid elective dental appointments for 4-6 weeks postop for this reason. I would suggest that you ask your surgeon for their particular recommendations.

Can people with myopia have rhinoplasty?
Myopia and rhinoplasty
Apr 12, 2017
There are no contraindications to rhinoplasty based on the degree of nearsightedness. Changing the dorsal profile does not worsen myopia or change the vision. Seek out an in-office consultation with an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon to discuss your concerns.

Damage done to nose by basketball after rhinoplasty?
Damage to nose after hit by basketball
Apr 12, 2017
Sorry to hear about your injury. It is possible for an impact to the nose to cause either a fracture (break) or shifting of the nasal septum. Sometimes the blow will cause the septum to slide off of the crest of bone that it normally rests upon. I would recommend that you have an evaluation with your rhinoplasty surgeon or another board certified rhinoplasty specialist to determine the extent of injury.

More confused than ever about whether stitches should be dissolvable or permanent?
Choice of suture material
Apr 11, 2017
The choice of suture material for manipulating cartilage during a rhinoplasty is highly variable depending on the surgeon and the techniques being used. Really, it is a non-issue since extrusion of permanent sutures is so rare. It is more important that you have trust in your surgeon’s ability and a good rapport than stress over the fine technical details of your operation.
Best wishes!
Are medications for an elective cosmetic procedure covered by insurance?
Medications for rhinoplasty
Apr 11, 2017
In most cases, medications for your rhinoplasty would be covered by the prescription plan of your health insurance. Generally, they are quite inexpensive.
