Rhinoplasty hump removal

Is it possible to remove the hump without aletering the tip?

I have performed Rhinoplasty for over 20 years and Yes, the hump can be removed, during a Rhinoplasty, without altering the shape of the nasal tip. You just need to communicate this desire to your Rhinoplasty surgeon. (Francis R. Palmer, III, MD, Beverly Hills Facial Plastic Surgeon)

Based upon the nicely posted photos your option for nasal surgery is a FULL rhinoplasty in my opinion. (Darryl J. Blinski, MD, Miami Plastic Surgeon)

Removing dorsal hump without altering tip of nose

Absolutely – you can remove the ‘hump’ on top of your nose without touching the tip. However, in order to shorten your nose, a full rhinoplasty is required. If you like your tip, then talk to your surgeon so that he will preserve it. Open and clear communication with your plastic surgeon is essential! So, please make your wishes known as clear as possible. (Gary M. Horndeski, MD, Texas Plastic Surgeon)

Several factors to be considered in nasal surgery

From your photograph you appear to have a low nasal radix. This is the shallow depression just above the nasal dorsum. The normal take off point for the nasal dorsum should be higher, just at the level your upper eyelashes.

If you simply have the dorsum lowered you will lose the balance of your nose. Some times this radix area must be augmented with a cartilage graft.

A slight elevation your nasal tip will also help with the overall appearance of your nose. (Jeffrey Zwiren, MD, Atlanta Plastic Surgeon)

“Long” noses are usually out of balance

Your nose seems long because the bridge line starts below your upper lash margin level, so you actually have a “dent” and then a hump. The best way to rebalance your nose is to remove 90% of the hump and then add a sliver of septal cartilage to the dent. This combination will give you the appearance of a smaller lower nose and a straight bridge. Your tip does not have to be touched. I would also consider shortening your nose a little, which also makes the lower nose seem smaller.

These are sophisticated techniques. You must find a surgeon whom you like who is experienced in them. (Mark B. Constantian, MD, FACS, Nashua Plastic Surgeon)

Long nose

In my opinion, you need a complete procedure. If you only take off the hump your nose will look like a long ski jump. You may not want to narrow the tip but. Rotationand projection are issues for you. (David A. Bray, Sr., MD, Los Angeles Facial Plastic Surgeon)

The hump only rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty hump removal from nose

It is possible to have only a hump reduction in rhinoplasty. Many years ago this was touted on the west coast as the ‘lunch hour’ rhinoplasty which implied that you could have a nasal hump removed and return to work.

From your photos however, your tip is strong and projecting and you would have far better balance with a complete rhinoplasty, which would help rotate the tip slightly and reduce the tension in your upper lip. (Peter E. Johnson, MD, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)

Your hump is particularly noticeable since your tip is droopy, and the angle between your nose and upper lip is too small. For an optimal result, you may benefit from tip rotation and nasal shortening along with hump removal.

You should consult several experienced rhinoplasty specialists to see what you could expect after well-performed Rhinoplasty Surgery. (Eric M. Joseph, MD, West Orange Facial Plastic Surgeon)

It is technically possible to remove a dorsal hump without addressing the nose. You should see someone experienced in rhinoplasty and listen to the total of the recommendations. (Jay M. Pensler, MD, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)

Removing hump without changing tip in rhinoplasty

I understand your desire to not alter the tip of your nose, however, if you remove the dorsal nasal hump it will actually make the nose appear longer because the hump on your nose breaks up the length of the dorsum visually and makes it look shorter. If you have the hump removed you should have the tip rotated upward to shorten the overall length of the nose as well. To do this you don’t have to make the tip smaller or do any other major alterations to it, but your nose will appear longer unless you alter the tip. (Gregory Branham, MD)

You can remove the nasal bump without changing your tip. You should consult with a rhinoplasty surgeon to discuss all your alternatives and decide what you want to achieve. (Richard W. Fleming, MD, Beverly Hills Facial Plastic Surgeon)

Options for Noses – The Tip vs the Bump

When having a rhinoplasty, it is possible to change the dorsum (bump) or the tip or both. It is important to have a balanced look overall. Your surgeon will be able to make sugesstions how this will be best achieved.

It may be nice to bring the tip back slightly so it isn’t as prominent to get a better balance for the face. (Benjamin Dunkley, DO, Salt Lake City Facial Plastic Surgeon)
